Stress: An effective way to manage it.

stress-and-acid-refluxWe all experience some sort of stress on a daily basis.  There could be many different factors that may result in our stress levels rising.  From deadlines, role conflict and ambiguity to financial responsibilities, traffic congestion, family problems and work overload we all experience some sort of stress every day of our lives.  What is stress? According to the American Institute of Stress, the term “stress”, as it is currently used was coined by Hans Selye in 1936, who defined it as “the non-specific response of the body to any demand for change”.  Therefore, I believe that it is important to understand how to become familiar with how stress affects your own self, and learn how to deal with it as well as develop healthy habits to ease the stress.

When stress becomes constant (chronic) then that is when there is a problem.  You see our body stays in high gear, off and on, for days or maybe even weeks at a time.  This type of stress can cause an increase in your heart rate and blood pressure.  Please understand that not all stress is bad.  There can be many things that we encounter in our lives that could be deemed as a stressful moment such as: watching a close football game or giving a speech to a group.  The main point is that we must learn how to manage stress properly because unhealthy reaction to stress can lead to many health problems.

There are many ways that we can help manage, even reduce stress.  Every day try to incorporate some sort of positive talk to yourself.  This sounds very silly, but it actually can help in both motivating yourself and turning those negative thoughts into positive ones.  Look in the mirror and tell yourself that you’re good-looking, that you can get through the day – in other words instead of thinking stuff like “I’m ugly” or “I just can’t do this,’ try saying stuff like “I’m gorgeous” or “I can do this.”

Another way to help manage or reduce stress is by taking a break for yourself.  Try setting aside 15 to 20 minutes every day for yourself.  Just sit or lie down, relax, do some deep breathing and think of serene, positive thoughts.  Try to engage in some sort of physical activity.  Do something that you will enjoy.  Walking, swimming, riding a bike or exercise or some sort.  I prefer to swim or practice martial arts.  Anything that will assist in letting go of your tension will help you feel better.

Grilling Healthy

20100703cornAre you a grill master?  Every guy I know will push their chest out and state, “Hell Yeah!”  Well, I enjoy lighting up the grill and throwing a nice piece of steak on the grill and grilling it up.  The question is though, is it actually possible to cook healthy food on the grill in order to maintain a diet or to lose weight?  Therefore, I have put on my Sherlock Holmes hat and grabbed my pipe and started to research to provide for you.

Has the thought of grilling fruit ever crossed your mind?  If you said no, don’t feel too bad.  It never crossed my mind either, until I started researching healthy grills.  According to Men’s Health, “Subjecting your pears, strawberries, peaches, or even bananas to the smoky heat of the grill results in a decidedly decadent side dish or dessert that’s every bit as delicious as it is good for you.” You can actually read more about the best fruits for the grill by visiting Men’s Heatlh online.

Grilling healthier is really not a hard habit to get into; just knowing how to tweak it is what can be hard at first.  Plus, knowing certain facts may actually save your life if not save money on future medical expenses.  According to a study that was done by the University of Minnesota, it was concluded that eating charred, well-done meat on a regular basis may actually increase the risk of pancreatic cancer by up to 60%.  As reported by The American Cancer Society, “Heterocyclic amines (HAs) are created by the burning of amino acids and other substances in meats cooked at particularly high temperatures and that are particularly well-done. HAs are turned up in grilled and barbecued meat as well as broiled and pan-fried meat.”

What I found out from the experts was that grilling healthier does not mean you cannot be a grill master.  It just means being cautious about what you place on the grill.  For example: When choosing your meat, try to get the ones that have leaner cuts and try to trim the fat unless it is already done for you.  If you leave the fat on the meat, it will drip causing smoke which may contain carcinogens.  Carcinogens are basically a substance capable of causing cancer in living tissue.  That is a big no-no in my book!  Therefore, I suggest lining the grill with foil and poke small holes in to allow the fat to still drip, but to control the amount of smoke that can get into your meat.  Another shocker is that the possibility of carcinogens is higher with charcoal or hot coals than propane.

Lastly, it was recommended by EatingWell.com that adding colorful vegetables to the grilled meal is good for you, tasty and worry-free.  You see, many of the chemicals that’s created when we grill meat is not created when we are grilling vegetables.  Plus, vegetables are naturally low in fat and only need a short time on the grill to get that grilled flavor.  Red, yellow, and green peppers, yellow squash, mushrooms, red onions, pineapple – all of these veggies grill well and make healthy additions to any plate.

To wrap up, I would like to include a lovely and tasty recipe that I found on EatingWell.com.  Trust me on this one, I tested it for you.

Motivation

motivationIn the world of life, motivation is the key to success.  This is more than true especially for business and those involved in anything that has to do with sales and marketing.  I find that a good minimum 15 minutes of personal development is all that is needed to keep your motivation up.  I am a big fan of Jim Rohn.  If you do not know who this great man is/was, I went ahead and took the liberty of citing his bibliography from his website (https://jimrohn.com/) below.

“For more than 40 years, Jim Rohn honed his craft like a skilled artist-helping people the world over sculpt life strategies that have expanded their imagination of what is possible. Those who had the privilege of hearing him speak can attest to the elegance and common sense of his material. It is no coincidence, then, that he is widely regarded as one of the most influential thinkers of our time, and thought of by many as a national treasure. Jim authored countless books and audio and video programs, and helped motivate and shape an entire generation of personal-development trainers and hundreds of executives from America’s top corporations.

Born to an Idaho farming family in the mid-1900s, Jim was ingrained with a work ethic that has served him well throughout his life. At 25, he met his mentor Earl Shoaff. And over the next six years he made his first fortune, yet didn’t get into speaking until he moved to Beverly Hills, California, when a friend at the Rotary Club asked him to tell his success story, which Rohn titled “Idaho Farm Boy Makes It to Beverly Hills.”

His speech went over so well that he received more invitations to share it, and better yet, they started paying him for it. In the beginning, he spoke in front of college and high-school classes and at service clubs, before moving on to seminars in 1963, which launched him into the personal-development business. From then on, Jim Rohn became a trailblazer in the self help and personal development industry, impacting the lives of millions through his life-changing material.

Jim Rohn focused on the fundamentals of human behavior that most affect personal and business performance. His is the standard to which those who seek to teach and inspire others are compared. He possessed the unique ability to bring extraordinary insights to ordinary principles and events, and the combination of his substance and style captures the imagination of those who hear or read his words.

Jim is known as one of the great wordsmiths of our time.”

I also decided to provide a video to one of my favorite speeches from Jim Rohn, “The Art of Sowing.”

What is Network Marketing?

What-Is-Network-MarketingWhy are so many people afraid to join a network marketing company?  Is it due to the negative reputation that many before have given this industry.  What is network marketing?  Simply put, network marketing is a marketing method which uses contracted individuals to represent a product or service to the consumer.  Just like the big box companies use Televisions, Radio, Billboards and such to reach their consumers – the same goes for network marketing companies.  Consider each representative/distributor/associate simply as a Television or Radio ad, or a walking billboard.  Many people get involved with such an industry with an attitude of getting rich quick.  This is a bad attitude to have when getting involved with this industry.  Making money is possible, but just like any other job – hard work and customer service skills are required.  You must be able to put the work in with the notion that the income will come one day. Patience is the key ingredient to this industry.

Now, people tend to confuse network marketing with pyramid-selling.  Both are completely different and one is illegal.  Think about a traditional business.  They might have a marketing department and a sales task force.  The marketing department is in charge of getting in front of the people and raising their awareness of the product or service available.  Once the people inquire about the product or service it is up to the sales team to make the actual sale happen.  In network marketing, both departments are merged into one department known as a representative or distributor.  Watch the video from Robert Kiyosaki  regarding the network marketing industry.

The ugly cost of obesity…

According to a recent an article released by the CNN Health. The direct and indirect cost of obesity “is as high as $147 billion – YES BILLION a year to deal with obesity, suggesting that obesity has become an epidemic affecting not only the adult population, but about 1/3 of the children in the nation.fat_kidAccording to an article that was written by the Associate Press, the New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says that expenditures, for their state, are caused by 1.4 million overweight and obese children which account for $327 million spent in 2011. The costs rise significantly as they get older.  Dinapoli said the responsibility of combating obesity falls on the parents, schools, and community groups. Government officials agree that they must help to address this rather costly problem to avoid future costs. BUT HOW ?

Obesity-Rates

According to the 2011 estimate over $4.3 billion has been spent on obesity related treatment that include conditions such as diabetes, and heart disease according to the data private health insurers and Medicare paid an estimated $7.5 billion.

T.G.I.F.

Group of friends having dinner outside.Thank Goodness It’s Friday is what is on everybody’s mind today.  It could be also due to the fact that it is pretty much everyone’s favorite day of the week – that is, unless we’re talking about Saturday.  As Friday afternoon draws nearer, everyone starts to consider how they can make this weekend an outstanding one.

For many, weekends can be the biggest temptation known to mankind.  These are the times we dread especially if we are maintaining diets – especially if the workweek gives us a better structure than the weekend does.

If eating junk food is a problem over the weekend, you can decrease cravings by adding some structure to your weekends as well. Try something that includes physical activity – a scheduled walk around the neighborhood with your family, taking a yoga class, joining a volleyball league, or even walking around the mall. Be careful if you choose the mall route though – the cookie or ice cream stands can be a serious temptation, and giving yourself a “reward” after your walk could set back you’re eating.

If your family tends to go out to dinner on Friday or Saturday nights, you don’t necessarily have to avoid the temptation of going. Get out with the family while the getting is good, and order one of the lower-calorie, better-for-you choices on the menu. If your family tends to go somewhere with heavier choices, speak up! You can do a ton for your health by asking you family to support your diet.

Weekends don’t have to be a make or break for you. The important thing is to get an idea of how you might “cheat” over the weekend, and curtail that behavior if possible.

Arthritis

According to the National Library of Medicine, arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints.  A joint is the area where two bones meet, but did you know that arthritis is more than just achy joints?  The Arthritis Foundation states that arthritis is an inflammatory disorder that consists of over 100 different diseases, affecting people of all ages, including children.  Just like many other diseases, one might suffer from stiffness, swelling, joint pain and limited movement.  This can be associated with arthritis because of the inflammation.  I have noticed that there are many different over-the-counter medicines and prescriptions that an individual can purchase.  These medications will help alleviate the pain and suffering from arthritis, but what do you think they are doing to your stomach lining?  I would like to suggest lifestyle changes that anyone can make that will help alleviate the pain and suffering from arthritis.

  1. Do plenty of exercises such as walking, swimming, bike riding (if you have balance problems consider using a stationary bike), yoga and something that I enjoy doing some form of martial arts.
  2. Get plenty of rest.  If your joints are aching relax.  Let them rest.
  3. Lose weight.
  4. Do physical therapy.  Consult with your doctor regarding this.
  5. Lower your stress levels.  Stress is something that all of us have to deal with, but if you can reduce it, that will help extend your life and reduce the inflammation of your joints.

Even though there are many forms of arthritis and they are long-term and cannot be cured, it does not mean that it cannot be managed.
